Homewood Youth Basketball Frequently Asked Questions

Q: If my child does not make the 7th grade team will they still have time to register?
A:
Yes, registration for these age divisions will remain open until after tryouts.

Q: When and where are Evaluations?
A:
To reduce the risk of Covid-19, we have decided that it would be wise to cancel “evaluations” for our basketball league.  We will use the information already on hand from previous seasons to divide the teams as evenly as possible.

Q: Is placement on a team guaranteed?
A: Yes, as long as you register your child before the registration deadline.

Q: Can team placement requests be made?
A: Yes, but only head coaches child(ren) and siblings are guaranteed.

Q: What size basketball does each grade division use?
A:
27.5 youth size / 28.5 women’s size / 29.5 men’s size

Kindergarten – 27.5
– 1st Grade – 27.5

2nd Grade Boys – 28.5
3rd Grade Boys – 28.5
4th Grade Boys – 28.5
5th Grade Boys – 28.5
6th & 7th Grade Boys – 29.5

2nd & 3rd Grade Girls – 28.5
4th & 5th Grade Girls – 28.5
6th Grade Girls – 28.5

Q: When will practices begin and where do they take place?
A1: (2nd-7th grade teams) Most teams will begin practice the first week of November 2020. Teams typically practice once or twice a week on weeknights at the Homewood Community Center, West Homewood Athletic Center,  Lee Center, Edgewood Elementary, Hall-Kent Elementary, Shades Cahaba Elementary, or Homewood Middle School. Your child’s coach will contact you with the specific location, date, and time. The younger age groups are encouraged to practice during the earliest available time frame.

A2: (Kindergarten & 1st Grade – Developmental Leagues) will begin the first week of January 2021. These age groups will not have a scheduled practice during the week. Instead, they will have a 30 minute practice on Saturdays followed immediately by a game; game/practice locations: TBA.

Q: When do the league games begin?
A1:  2nd-7th grade games will begin: First week of December 2020.
A2: Kindergarten & 1st Grade league games will begin: January 2021.

Q: When are the games played?
A1:
  Mostly Saturdays during the regular season games depending on gym availability games could be played between 9am – 5pm. We may play a few weeknight games this season depending on gym availability.
A2: During the end of the season tournament there is a chance that some games could be scheduled during the week.

Q: How long is the Youth Basketball season?
A1: (2nd– 7th grade) the season usually begins in early November and runs through late February.
A2: (Kindergarten & 1st grade) 8 weeks – early January thru late February.

Q: What does the registration fee cover?
A:
Jersey, shorts, referees and awards for teams finishing in 1st and 2nd place. All K-1st graders playing in the coed developmental league will receive an award.

Q: What type of shoes does my child need?
A:
non-marking athletic shoes.

Q: Does this league travel to play games?
A:
Our goal is for enough girls and boys to register so that we can have enough teams in each age group so that teams do not have to travel to play games. However in past years, sometimes the girl’s teams have had to travel to Vestavia and/or Trussville. 7th grade boys may also travel at times.

Q: How can we help so that we don’t have to travel to play games?
A:
Recruit children to play

Q: I would like to be a Head Coach or an Assistant Coach, What do I need to do?
A1:
While registering your child online be sure to check on his/her form that you would like to coach.
